The Evolution of MARIS

The acronym MARIS originally stood for Marine and Aquatic Research and Investigation Schools. As the project grew, expert labs, NGOs, and regulatory agencies expressed strong interest in participating, seeing themselves as key partners in the mission.

This organic growth led to a broader, more inclusive definition of our network: Marine and Aquatic Research and Investigation Stakeholders. This change reflects our core belief that solving complex environmental challenges requires a collaborative ecosystem bridging education, science, and policy.
